Engine Writing
The Engine_Writing command changes how the Engine writes and advances Spoken Lines: the typewriter speed, the speed while the player holds the speed-up or slow-down input, the delay before a Line advances on its own, and how Lines follow their voice files. Changes apply from the next Line and, by default, are reverted when the Dialogue ends; values set on an Actor or a Line still take precedence. An invalid value is reported and ignored, without affecting the Command's other keys. Keys Every key also accepts a ¢ expression instead of a fixed value, unless its description says otherwise. See CandyRef Expressions. Writing_Speed Description: The typewriter speed (writing_speed). Values: • Characters per second: Such as 30. • 0: Display every Line instantly. • Reset (case-insensitive): Restore the value the Engine started with. • null: Not set; the setting retains its current value. Continue_Fast_Speed Description: The typewriter speed while the player holds the speed-up input (continue_fast_speed). Values: • Characters per second: Such as 90. • Reset (case-insensitive): Restore the value the Engine started with. • null: Not set; the setting retains its current value. Continue_Slow_Speed Description: The typewriter speed while the player holds the slow-down input (continue_slow_speed). Values: • Characters per second: Such as 10. • Reset (case-insensitive): Restore the value the Engine started with. • null: Not set; the setting retains its current value. Auto_Advance Description: The delay after which a fully written Line advances on its own (auto_advance). Values: • Number of seconds: Such as 2.5. • -1: Only advance when the player does. • Reset (case-insensitive): Restore the value the Engine started with. • null: Not set; the setting retains its current value. Auto_Advance_Per_Character Description: Seconds added to the auto-advance delay for each character a Line displays (auto_advance_per_character). See Dialogue Advance. Values: • Number of seconds: Such as 0.05. • 0: Nothing added. • Reset (case-insensitive): Restore the value the Engine started with. • null: Not set; the setting retains its current value. Sync_Write_Speed_Voice Description: Whether the typewriter speed adapts to the length of the voice file (sync_write_speed_voice). Values: • 1 or true: Adapt it. • 0 or false: Don't. • Reset (case-insensitive): Restore the value the Engine started with. • null: Not set; the setting retains its current value. Await_Voice_Playback Description: Whether advancing waits for the voice to finish playing (await_voice_playback). Values: • 1 or true: Wait. • 0 or false: Don't wait. • Reset (case-insensitive): Restore the value the Engine started with. • null: Not set; the setting retains its current value. Revert Description: Whether the Command's changes are reverted when the Dialogue ends, so that the next Dialogue starts with the Engine's original settings. They are reverted at the very end of the Dialogue, whatever ended it; a Jump doesn't end the Dialogue. Values: • 1 or true: Revert the change when the Dialogue ends, restoring the value from before the Dialogue first changed that setting. • 0 or false: Retain the change after the Dialogue ends, until something else changes the setting. This also cancels the reverting of any earlier change to the same setting in this Dialogue. • null: Not set; the Engine's revert_engine_settings applies when its enable_revert_engine_settings is on, otherwise revert_engine_settings in Candy_Properties.gd, which is on by default.
