Candy Dialogue Engine
Candy Dialogue Engine is made of four parts, all stored in a single folder of your project:
  • Engine: the code that runs Dialogues. A game can have several Engines, each with its own settings.
  • Dialogues: what an Engine runs. A Dialogue is a list of Lines, and each Line is a Command: make an Actor speak, play media, display choices, modify a variable...
  • UI: what displays a Dialogue on screen. It consists of separate UI Elements, such as a dialogue box, a choice menu or a video player, each replaceable by one of your own.
  • Database: the game data Dialogues rely on, such as Actors, Roles, flags and translations.
The Folders page says where each part is stored. How They Work Together
  • Your game tells an Engine which Dialogue to load, and where to start it.
  • The Engine runs the Dialogue's Lines one at a time.
  • When a Line has something to display or play, the Engine hands it to the matching UI Element.
  • Along the way, the Engine reads the Database (for example, the speaker's name and settings), and Lines can modify it.
  • When the Dialogue ends, the Engine clears its UI Elements and returns control to your game.
Dialogues themselves are written in Candy Dialogue Creator, a separate application, then exported to your project (see Candy Dialogue Creator).
