Media files (portraits, audio, video, VN busts, backgrounds...) don't need to be upgraded: they work in 1.2 as they are.
During the upgrade, the Wizard moves your media files from your 1.1.3 installation into the new 1.2 installation. While doing so, it changes a few of their folders, as described below. If your game code refers to any of these folders or files by their path, update those paths.
The Wizard retains a copy of your original 1.1.3 installation, for reference, in the Candy_DE/.Install/Candy_DE_1.1.3 folder. Godot doesn't display this folder: open it in your file manager (its name starts with a dot, so hidden files may need to be shown). This page calls it "the 1.1.3 copy".
Actor Media Folders
Actor media are the files that belong to a character: their portraits, VN busts, sprites and voice files. Their folders are set in Candy_Properties.gd, by the portraits_folder, busts_folder, sprite_folder and voice_folder settings.
In 1.1.3, these folders were inside Candy_DE/Media/Characters by default. In 1.2, Media/Characters is renamed Media/Actors, to match the name Candy Dialogue Engine uses for characters (Actors).
- If the default folders were in use, the Wizard moves your files into Candy_DE/Media/Actors, and the four settings point there.
- If these settings pointed to folders of your own, your files remain in those folders, and the settings still point to them.
"Default" or "French", and its name can include tags, which set the condition. For example, "Default_S=F" is used when the speaker's Gender is F (see Variations).
When a Line is voiced, every Variation other than "Default" has its voice file in a folder of its own, named after the Variation (see Voice).
In 1.1.3, tags were written with a colon (:), such as S:F. This was incompatible with Windows, which doesn't accept colons in folder names. So in 1.2, tags are written with an equals sign (=), such as S=F, and the Wizard renames these voice folders: Default_S:F becomes Default_S=F.
Voice Folder Layout
Inside the voice folder, voice files are sorted into sub-folders. In 1.1.3, this layout was fixed: a folder for the Actor, then one for the Conversation, then one for the Block. For example: Voices/Alice/Meeting/Start.
In 1.2, the layout is chosen with a new setting in Candy_Properties.gd, voice_path (see Voice). By default, it adds a folder for the dialogue file, between the Actor and the Conversation: Voices/Alice/Intro/Meeting/Start.
The Wizard sets voice_path to the 1.1.3 layout, so your voice files don't move. To switch to another layout, such as the 1.2 default, change voice_path, then click the "Move Voice Files" button in the Wizard's Folders tool: it moves your voice files to the folders the new layout expects. The Folders tool is in the drop-down at the top of the Wizard's panel.
Background Animation Libraries
Background effects are animations played on the layers of a background scene, such as a shake or a fade, with the BG_Effect_Play command (called BG_Effect in 1.1.3). They're stored in AnimationLibrary files (see Background Effects).
In 1.1.3, each layer had its own folder for these libraries, an Animation_Libraries folder inside the layer's folder (for example, Backgrounds/Sky/Animation_Libraries). In 1.2, every layer shares a single Animation_Libraries folder, directly inside the backgrounds folder: Backgrounds/Animation_Libraries.
The Wizard moves your libraries into that folder. Two libraries can't have the same name in one folder: if several of your layers had a library with the same name, the Wizard moves only one of them, and leaves the others in the 1.1.3 copy. The Upgrade Report lists them (open it with the "Upgrade Report" button in the Wizard's Setup tool). Rename them, then move them into the Animation_Libraries folder yourself, and update the Lines that use them.
Effect Animation Libraries
The Effect_Play command (called Effect in 1.1.3) plays an animation on an effect player, such as a screen flash. In 1.1.3, the animation had to be loaded on the effect player itself, in the player's scene. In 1.2, it can also be loaded from an AnimationLibrary file, stored in a new folder: Media/General/Effects/Animation_Libraries (see Effect Play).
This folder is new, so the Wizard doesn't move anything into it. Your effects continue to work as they did in 1.1.3.
Files Shipped with 1.2
1.2 ships with three animation libraries of its own:
- AL_1.res, in Media/General/Backgrounds/Animation_Libraries: background effects.
- JML.res and VN_Library_1.res, in Media/Actors/Busts/Animation_Libraries: VN bust effects, including the effects played when an Actor joins, moves or leaves (see JML Effects).
