A Media_Pause command pauses one or more media players, until a Media_Resume command or for a number of Lines. Instead of freezing, a paused player can repeat a segment of its media until it resumes: a pause loop. Every key is described in Media Pause and Media Resume.
Pausing
A Media_Pause command with no other setting pauses its players until a Media_Resume. With a Lines value, the pause ends by itself after that many Lines (see Media That Wait for Lines in Waiting).
A paused player's Duration, and a stop scheduled on it, are paused with it: they count playback, not time.
Resuming
A Media_Resume command resumes its players, and cancels an automatic resume set by Lines. It also starts a media held on its first frame by a Loops of 0, which then plays once.
A video or image stopped on a frame by a Media_Stop isn't paused, so a Media_Resume doesn't restart it.
Pause Loops
A pause loop repeats a segment of the media while the player is paused: a few bars of music, a breathing animation, the rain in a video. The segment is set by Pause_Loop_Start and Pause_Loop_End, as an absolute position (4.5, 00:04.5, f=120) or relative to the pause point (+2, -00:01.5, f-12). An empty key is the pause point itself, so with both keys empty there is no loop, and the player freezes.
For example, a Music player with Pause_Loop_Start set to -4 repeats the four seconds before the pause point until the music resumes.
When the pause point is inside the segment, the playback continues to the segment's end before the first repeat; otherwise it jumps to the segment's start. A segment that ends before it starts is reported, and the player pauses without a loop; so does a loop on a player that isn't playing, or displays a still image.
Resuming from a loop
Pause_Loop_Resume decides where the playback continues when the player resumes:
| Value | The playback resumes... |
| Return (the default) | At once, from the pause point. |
| Continue | At once, from the loop's current position. |
| Finish_Return | Once the loop reaches its end, from the pause point. |
| Finish_Continue | Once the loop reaches its end, continuing from there. |
!, the Line waits for the fade. A Media_Volume command during the loop changes the volume the player returns to, not the loop's.
For example, a Music player with Pause_Loop_Start set to -4, Pause_Volume to -=12, Pause_Volume_Time to 1 and Resume_Volume_Time to 1 repeats the last four seconds of music quietly during a tense exchange, and returns to full volume one second after it resumes.
A looping player is paused
To everything else, the player is paused: a wait on it lasts until it resumes, its repeats aren't counted in its Loops, a Lines count resumes it as usual, a Media_Skip moves the pause point rather than the loop, and a Dialogue suspension halts the loop until the suspension ends. A new Media_Pause replaces the loop, from the same pause point and volume. A Media_Play or a Media_Stop ends it, and restores the volume at once.
Each repeat of a video is a seek, so its smoothness depends on the video file.
