Waiting
By default, the Dialogue continues as soon as a Media_Play command has started its players. Two keys of each player, Wait_Loops and Wait_Time, delay the Dialogue instead, on the Media_Play command itself or on a later Media_Wait command. The reverse is also possible: a paused player can wait for a number of Lines before it resumes. Wait_Loops and Wait_Time The Dialogue resumes once the player has completed Wait_Loops loops, plus Wait_Time into the following loop, or earlier if the playback ends or is stopped. With both empty, the Dialogue doesn't wait at all.
  • A Music player with Loops set to -1 and Wait_Loops to 1: the music loops until it is stopped, and the Dialogue waits for the first loop.
  • A Sound player with Wait_Time set to 00:02.5: the Dialogue continues 2.5 seconds into the sound.
  • A Video player with Wait_Loops set to 1 and Wait_Time to f=24: the Dialogue continues one loop and 24 frames into the video.
A Wait_Time longer than the media continues into further loops. A value in frames isn't accepted on an audio player (see Frame Rate in Playing Media). Several Players When several players of one Line have a wait, the Dialogue resumes once every one of them has reached its wait. A player without a wait doesn't delay the Dialogue. Waiting Later A Media_Wait command waits for a playback started earlier, with the same two keys: a theme started before a conversation, waited for a few Lines later, before the scene changes. A player that isn't playing, or has already finished, doesn't delay the Dialogue. Media_Wait only delays the Dialogue that runs it, so it is accepted on any player, even one that another Engine owns or holds (see Shared Players). Its Box key moves the dialogue UI once every wait of the Line has completed. Paused Players A wait on a paused player lasts until the player resumes and reaches the wait. The exception is a pause with a Lines count (below): since the Lines couldn't advance during the wait, a wait on such a player doesn't delay the Dialogue. Media That Wait for Lines A Media_Pause command with a Lines value resumes its players after that many Lines, counted by the Engine that issued the pause: music paused for the three Lines of a whispered exchange, for example. By default only the Spoken Lines that are displayed count, which the All key changes to every Line, whatever its Command. A Spoken Line skipped because of its disposition or its Variations isn't displayed, so it isn't counted. The Engine's mp_count_dispositions and mp_count_variations settings count those Lines too (see Dispositions). See Pausing and Resuming.
