Next Steps - Folders
Candy Dialogue Engine locates media files by their name: when Alice speaks a Line with happy.png as her portrait, the Engine searches Alice's portrait folder for that file. Each kind of media has a folder of its own, with a sub-folder per Actor, media player or background layer (see Media Files). Candy Dialogue Engine is installed without these folders: the Wizard's Folders tool creates them from your project. Choose Folders in the drop-down at the top of the Wizard's panel. Fill in your Actors first (see Data): the Actor folders are created from the actors dictionary. Voices
  • Generate Voice Folders: a folder for each Spoken Line of your Dialogues, arranged as the voice_path setting specifies: by Actor, Dialogue, Conversation and Block, by default (see Voice). When the folders are sorted by Actor, Lines whose speaker is only known while the game runs (a Role or an expression) are left out.
  • Move Voice Files...: after you modify voice_folder or voice_path, moves your voice files to the folders these settings now designate. Files no Line uses are left in place. A note under the buttons warns you when the files no longer follow these settings.
Run Generate Voice Folders again whenever you write new Dialogues. Actors One folder per Actor in the actors dictionary:
  • Generate Portrait Folders: for the portraits displayed beside their Lines.
  • Generate Bust Folders: for their Visual Novel busts.
  • Generate Sprite Folders: for the sprites cutscene Commands play.
Media Players One folder per media player: the nodes of your dialogue UI scenes that play audio, images or videos (see Media Players):
  • Generate Audio Folders: for the audio players (the Voice player has its own folders, above).
  • Generate Image Folders: for the image players.
  • Generate Video Folders: for the video players.
Backgrounds and Effects
  • Generate Background Folders: one folder per layer of your background scenes.
  • Generate Effects Folder: the Animation_Libraries folder, for the animations Effect Commands play (a screen shake, a fade...).
Results
  • Folders are only ever added, never deleted or renamed, so a button can be clicked again at any time: after adding Actors, media players or background layers, for example.
  • The Result panel lists the folders the tool created, the ones that already existed, and the problems it met. Show in FileSystem selects a folder in the FileSystem dock.
  • The location of each kind of folder is set in Candy_Properties.gd (portraits_folder, voice_folder...). See Folders.
