Skipping Media
In this tutorial, you will learn to move a sound's playback to another position, with the Media_Skip command. John plays Alice a recording of birdsong, and goes back five seconds when she asks to hear a bird again. Before You Start This tutorial uses the Actors and portraits of the Beginner tutorials: Alice, John and the construction worker. Write its scene in the Dialogue of your choice: the Dialogue of the Beginner tutorials, or a new one (File > New Dialogue). 1. The Sound File Sounds are played by audio players. The dialogue UI provided with Candy Dialogue Engine contains several of them, and this tutorial uses the one named Ambient, for background sounds: the AmbientPlayer node of the dialogue UI scene. Each player plays the files of a folder named after it: the Ambient player's files are in Candy_DE/Media/General/Audio/Ambient. The birdsong, Birds.ogg, is already in that folder: it's part of the Media folder copied in the Dialogue tutorial. It lasts twenty seconds, and loops without a gap. 2. Writing the Scene 1. Add a Conversation named "Recording", as in the Conversations tutorial. 2. In its Block_1, add four Spoken Lines, then an End command after the last one:

John(empty)I recorded the birds in the park this morning. Listen.
Alice(empty)Wait, what was that bird? Play that part again.
John(empty)Sure. Going back five seconds.
AliceHappy.pngThere it is. Beautiful.
To play the birdsong: 1. Select John's first Line, "I recorded the birds in the park this morning. Listen." 2. Open the Media tab of the Buttons panel, and click Media Play. 3. In the Field Tree, on the left of the form, click + Player. 4. In the name field, at the top of Player 1's fields, replace "Player_1" with "Ambient", or click the field's v button and select Ambient in the list. 5. Click the v button of the File field, and select Birds.ogg. 6. Leave the Loops field at 1: the recording plays once. 3. Going Back in the Recording 1. Select John's Line "Sure. Going back five seconds." 2. In the Media tab of the Buttons panel, click Media Skip. 3. In the Field Tree, click + Player. 4. In the name field, replace "Player_1" with "Ambient", or select Ambient in the list of the field's v button. 5. In the Time field, write "-5".

How Skipping Works The Time field sets where the playback goes:
TimeThe playback...
-5Goes back 5 seconds.
+5Goes forward 5 seconds.
10, or 00:10Goes to 10 seconds from the start of the file.
The sound continues to play from its new position. 4. Testing the Scene 1. Right-click Recording in the Dialogue Navigator, and select Test Here. 2. Advance to John's Line "Sure. Going back five seconds.", and listen to the birds. 3. Advance: the recording goes back five seconds, and the same calls are heard again. The recording lasts twenty seconds: advance through the scene before it ends. If the Test Fails • No sound is played: check that Birds.ogg is in the Ambient folder, that the Godot Editor imported it, and that the Media_Play command comes after John's first Line. • The recording doesn't go back: check that the player of the Media_Skip command is named Ambient, and that its Time is "-5", with the minus sign. The recording now follows the conversation: a Dialogue can move any sound to the moment it needs.
