Your First Dialogue
This page follows a short Dialogue from an empty profile to a file your game runs. It assumes that the profile is connected to your Godot project (see Project Setup) and uses the default layout.
1. The Empty Dialogue
A new Dialogue contains one Conversation, Conversation_1, with one empty Block, Block_1. Both are listed in the Dialogue Navigator, on the left.
To rename one, click it and press F2, or right-click it and choose Rename.
2. Add a Spoken Line
Click the Block in the Navigator, then click Spoken Line in the Dialogue Buttons panel at the bottom left.
A Line appears in the Block, and the Dialogue Editor displays its form.
3. Fill It In
In the Dialogue Editor:
- In Speaker, click the arrow left of the field and pick an Actor. The Actor's Reference can also be typed.
- To pick one of that Actor's portraits, click the arrow under the portrait preview. Hovering a file in the dropdown displays it beside the mouse pointer.
- In the large text box, type what the Actor says.
1 to pause for one second between two Lines.
To reorder Lines, drag them in the Navigator, or select them and press Alt+Up or Alt+Down.
5. Save
Press Ctrl+S, or choose File > Save, and name the save.
A save is Candy Dialogue Creator's own working file. It isn't what your game reads: that is the exported file, below. See Saving and Loading.
6. Test
With your project open in the Godot editor and Candy Wizard enabled, press Test in the top bar. Candy Dialogue Creator exports the Dialogue, and the Godot editor runs it in a testing scene.
To start from a particular Line, right-click it in the Navigator and choose Test Here.
See Testing.
7. Export
When the Dialogue is ready, choose File > Export Dialogue.... Type a file name, such as intro.txt, and press Export. The file is written to your project's Dialogues folder, where Candy Dialogue Engine loads it.
See Exporting.
