References
Panels and widgets that work together are linked by a reference: a short text, typed in their Options. Those that have the same reference work as a group.
Everything starts with the reference 1, so in a simple layout everything is linked without any setup. References matter when two groups are needed side by side: two Lines open at once, two Variations displayed together, two colors at hand.
A reference can be any text. Choose names that describe the group's purpose, such as Original and Translation.
Between Panels
Dialogue Navigators and Dialogue Editors
A reference names a selection: the rows that are selected, and the Line that is open.
- Navigators with the same reference share their selection.
- A Dialogue Editor edits the Line opened in the Navigators with the same reference.
2, two Lines are open at once, to compare or to copy between them.
The Dialogue Buttons panel, pasting and the keyboard shortcuts act on one Navigator only: the one clicked last. The dot at the left of a Navigator's toolbar is full in that one, and empty in the others.
Inserts and Color Selectors
The color tags of an Inserts panel use the color of the Color Selector with the same reference.
Several Inserts panels can share a reference. Each Color Selector has a reference of its own: a new one receives the lowest free number.
Between Widgets
The references of widgets only link the widgets of one Dialogue Editor. Two Dialogue Editors never control each other's widgets.
The Variation Widgets
A Variation Selector picks a Variation for every widget with its reference:
| Widget | Its reference |
| Speech Editor, Advanced Speech Editor, Speech Viewer | The selector whose Variation it displays. |
| Variation Properties | The selector whose Variation it edits. |
| Voice Preview | The selector whose Variation it plays. |
| Counters | Two references: the selector whose Variation is counted, and the selector whose Variation it's compared with. |
| Variation Editor | Two references: its Main Selector, and its Translate To selector. It assigns its Groups references of their own, built from its Ref Prefix. |
Variation Selector (reference A) Variation Selector (reference B)
Speech Editor (reference A) Speech Editor (reference B)
Counters (Reference 1: A, Reference 2: B)Default on the left and French on the right: each editor displays its own Variation, and the Counters show how much longer one is than the other.
Special Cases
- An empty reference counts as
1. - A widget whose reference no selector has still functions: it displays the
DefaultVariation. - References are part of each Panel's and widget's settings, so they are saved with layouts.
