Variation Editor
The Variation Editor edits several Variations of a Spoken Line at once. It repeats a small layout of widgets, called a Group, once per Variation, and stacks the Groups one under the other. It's what the Randoms, Translate and TTS tabs of the default Spoken Line form consist of. See Translating and Random and TTS Variations for how to use those tabs. This page describes the widget's setup.
Spoken Line Randoms Tab
How It Works
  • A Variation Selector outside the widget, its Main Selector, picks a Variation.
  • The widget reads that Variation without its random and TTS tags: its base Variation. With French_S=F_#2_TTS picked, the base Variation is French_S=F.
  • It then builds one Group per Variation, depending on its mode.
  • Each Group displays the name of its Variation, over the widgets of the mode's Group layout.
Inside a Group, the widgets are assigned their Variation: a Group needs no Variation Selector of its own. Modes
ModeGroups
RandomOne per random Variation of the base Variation: French_S=F_#1, French_S=F_#2...
TTSOne for the base Variation, then one per random Variation, each to write its TTS twin.
TranslateOne per Variation, each showing it in two languages: the Main Selector's, translated from, and the Translate To selector's, translated to.
Edit LayoutA single Group, with placeholder text, to design a Group layout.
Random Variations switched off in Settings > Dialogue > Variations receive no Group. Widgets in a Group
WidgetDisplays
Speech Editor, Advanced Speech EditorThe Group's Variation. In TTS mode, its TTS twin. In Translate mode, the language translated to.
Speech ViewerThe Group's Variation. In Translate mode, the language translated from, unless its Translation option is on.
Voice Preview, Variation PropertiesThe Group's Variation. Variation Properties are left out of TTS mode.
CountersRandom: the Variation against the base one. TTS: the TTS twin against its Variation. Translate: the translation against the original.
Designing a Group Layout A Group layout is designed once, saved under a name, then used by one or more modes. 1. In the widget's Options, set Mode to Edit Layout. The widget displays one Group, with placeholder text. 2. Lay the Group out like any line layout: its areas have the buttons of Edit Layout mode, to split them and choose their widgets (see Line Layouts). A typical translation Group is a Speech Viewer beside a Speech Editor, with Counters below. 3. On the Group's outermost area button, choose Save Area Layout... and name the layout. 4. Back in Options, pick that layout for the modes that should use it, then set Mode to the mode you want. Picking a layout in Options copies it into the widget. Saving the layout again later doesn't change that copy: pick it again in Options to adopt the new version. A mode with no layout displays a message asking for one. Options Right-click the widget and choose Options.

All variations of both languagesThe bare language, every tag combination and every random Variation.
The selected variation and its randomsThe Main Selector's base Variation, then its random Variations.
The selected variation onlyThe Main Selector's base Variation alone.
Only Variations enabled in one of the two languages receive a Group. TTS Variations never do in this mode. Tab Setup A tab built around a Variation Editor requires:
  • A Variation Selector, with the reference typed in Main Selector.
  • For Translate mode, a second Variation Selector, with the reference typed in Translate To.
  • The Variation Editor itself, with a Group layout for its mode.
Assign the selectors references that no other widget of the tab uses, so that picking a Variation there only drives the Variation Editor. The Variation Editor contains a copy of everything it displays, so a saved tab, panel or window layout that contains it restores it whole, in any profile. With Scroll on, the stack of Groups scrolls inside the widget. Off, the widget is as tall as its Groups and the tab scrolls.
